Thermal Imaging
Why thermal imaging?
Thermal Imaging is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that is drug and radiation free.
It is quick full body imaging only takes about 20 minutes to complete. The results will then be emailed to you within 48 hours of imaging.
What does thermal imaging see?
1. Circulation problems– tissue perfusion and blood flow within the superficial veins provides variation in the thermal gradients found within tissues. All organic tissues show heat
2. Metabolism – active metabolic areas, such as neoplastic tissues or areas of inflammation, have an increased thermal gradient greater than those areas less active metabolically.
3. Chronic and acute pain – neurovascular and neuromuscular conditions are depicted as having increased thermal gradients throughout their respective anatomical areas.
Inflammatory processes can be identified weeks earlier than with normal routine clinical evaluations. This depicts a facet of preventive medicine “preventative lameness”.
When should thermal imaging be done?
1. Pre-season or pre-event evaluation - ensure the health of your horse before they come back into work or before you take them to a big event.
2. Post-season evaluation - ensure that after a long and taxing event that your horse is still in good health!
3. Saddle fitting - Use this to check how your saddle is sitting on your horse and to make sure that it is not affecting them in any way.
a. As your horse increases muscling on their back the way your saddle sits may affect how they go, always check how your saddle fits your horse throughout the season as muscle increases or decreases.
b. Saddles change, flocking can bunch (wool)
c. New saddle
4. Pre-purchase Exam - During a pre-purchase exam thermography allows the equine practitioner to perform a more thorough examination and evaluation. Allowing only areas of alert to be evaluated further in depth and saving the owners money and keeping the horse away from unnecessary radiation.
5. Lameness Evaluation - lameness can be difficult to pin-point. Thermal imaging can save you from huge bills and lots of testing. Saving you time and money!
6. Evaluate your Barn, wiring can go bad pipes can leak. Thermal imaging can identify problems throughout your barn that are invisible to the eye.
